How do you recognise when a robe worn by a painting subject is velvet, or the cup on the table is made of silver, when your eyes only see swirls of paint?

TU Delft Industrial Design researcher, Mitchell van Zuijlen, explored this as part of his doctoral research resulting in the Materials in Paintings Dataset, a repository of 20,000 paintings collected from museums all around the world, including Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and The Prado Museum in Madrid.

Thank you to all who joined our recent call!

It was great to welcome participants from different research institutions to have a discussion about…

  • ‘LCRDM Medical device regulation’ with Anne Aarts (Eindhoven University of Technology)
  • ‘Hand Neuro-Motor Characterisation: Publishing medical data’ with Kostas Nizamis (University of Twente)

  • Welcome to new CiTG data steward: Lora Armstrong

Lora has a  background is in laboratory-based geology research, but a growing interest in data led her to leave academia to work on data science and open data initiatives for the government of London. After moving to the Netherlands, she worked as a data manager before becoming a data steward in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at TU Delft.
